South Africa’s solidarity union says that just over 58,000 workers could lose their jobs this year. More than 29,000 jobs on the line are in the mining sector and 8,000 in the metal and engineering industry. Layoffs are a thorny political issue in Africa’s most industrialised economy where the jobless rate is around 25 percent.

For young South Africans born after the end of apartheid, a generation known as ‘born frees’, it is economic inequality that divides more than race. Many are disillusioned with the country’s leaders for failing to improve job prospects, one of the reasons why only a third of South Africans aged between 18 and 19 are registered to vote in Wednesday’s elections.
